The Bosco e Paludi di Rauccio regional natural park is a protected natural area in Puglia which extends over a total area of ​​1593 hectares and was established in 2002. Eight hectares of land are occupied by a holm oak forest, a residual testimony of the "forest of Lecce", a wooded area that in the Middle Ages developed in an area between Lecce, the Adriatic coast, Otranto and Brindisi. Adjacent to the holm oak forest, there is a marshy area called the Specchia della Milogna that covers a surface of about 90 ha; then there are two coastal basins, Idume and Fetida, of about 4 ha, areas of modest extension of Mediterranean scrub, garrigue and, finally, a stretch of coast extending about 4 km. Such vastness and environmental variety results in a remarkable wealth of vegetation. In particular, in the thick undergrowth of the holm oak forest, grow the mastic, the hylatrum, the buckthorn, the myrtle or even the sarsaparilla and the Mediterranean honeysuckle. Among the rare species present in the park, it is also worth mentioning the presence of the marsh orchid and, above all, the greater periploca, a species at risk of extinction. The fauna is equally varied. In the marshes that form in the clearings of the forest, it is possible to observe amphibians, such as the Italian newt, the green toad, the Italian tree frog and the badger. The park is also a stopover site for migratory birds. In the spring season, hoopoes and turtle doves stop there, while sometimes during the winter, in the Idume basin, the presence of the swan has been detected. Some huts placed as observation points allow you to admire the fauna present. In the park area, moreover, there are some architectural emergencies of historical and artistic importance. Along the coast there are two of the watchtowers that, starting from the Middle Ages, were built for defensive purposes against the Turks; these are Torre Rinalda and Torre Chianca. In the internal area then, there are the Barone Vecchio farmhouses, dating back to the mid-16th century and the Rauccio farmhouse complex from the 17th century, consisting of the farmhouse, the dovecote tower and the chapel, of which few traces remain. The farmhouse, recently restored, houses the aquaterrarium and is the headquarters of the WWF which carries out the activities of protection and enhancement of the park here.
