Palude del Capitano (Porto Selvaggio, LE)
One of Salento's hidden treasures, a place that enchants with its wild beauty and pristine nature. Located a short distance from Porto Cesareo, Palude del Capitano is a nature reserve that is part of the larger Porto Selvaggio Regional Natural Park, a protected area encompassing some of the Ionian coast's most captivating landscapes. Far from the hustle and bustle of the most popular tourist destinations, it is the ideal destination for those wishing to immerse themselves in a unique and authentic landscape. Here, nature reigns supreme, with its diverse flora and fauna and its evocative landscapes characterized by karst pools, the famous "spunnulate."
Palude del Capitano stands out for its unique landscape, where land blends harmoniously with water. This nature reserve is characterized by a series of karst depressions called "spunnulate," small freshwater lakes formed by the subsidence of the limestone terrain.
The spunnulate are the beating heart of Palude del Capitano. These small natural lakes, with their clear, fresh waters, are home to various species of amphibians and fish, offering a fascinating natural spectacle. While walking along the reserve's trails, it's easy to come across these bodies of water reflecting the sky, surrounded by myrtle, mastic, and juniper plants. Every corner of this marsh invites you to stop, breathe deeply, and be enveloped by the wild beauty of this place.
Within the Palude del Capitano area is the picturesque Frascone beach, a small bay that represents a corner of paradise for those who love wild and unspoiled coastlines. Reached with a short walk from the parking lot, Frascone beach offers a varied stretch of coastline, with low, easy-to-reach rocks on one side and a small sandy shore on the other, ideal for relaxing in the sun. This beach is perfect for those seeking a more intimate and private experience, away from the crowds, allowing them to enjoy the rugged and wild nature in complete isolation.
A few meters from the shore lies a small island that can be easily reached by swimming. The sea that laps Frascone beach is extraordinarily clear, with waters reflecting every shade of blue and green. Although diving is not permitted in Palude del Capitano due to its delicate ecosystem, just a short distance away you can find perfect spots for snorkeling or simply relaxing in the cool of the waves.
