The name of Lucugnano has always been associated with that of the most famous of its inhabitants, the whimsical and irreverent Archpriest Papa Galeazzo (Papa Caliazzu), a witty character, author and actor of funny, legendary and anachronistic episodes.
From an anthropological point of view, Pope Galeazzo represents, in the collective imagination of Salento, the most emblematic, pyrotechnic and irreverent figure, daughter of the popular culture of the mid-sixteenth century.
A country parish priest who really existed
Don Galeazzo is the country parish priest who embodies the simplicity of a Don Abbondio with all the caustic cunning of a Pulcinella. Very tasty cunti and culacchi are attributed to him, i.e. humorous stories and anecdotes, often of a sexual nature, which have the aim of making fun of nobles and high prelates, sometimes portrayed as foolish and pompous, bringing out by contrast the wit and the sagacity of the astute priest.
However, there are many doubts about his existence: some think that his figure was the fruit of creativity and popular imagination, others maintain - instead - that he lived in the 16th century.
