The Torre Pinta hypogeum is an underground structure featuring a dovecote tower, located in Otranto.

History and description

Neither the construction date nor the original function of the Torre Pinta hypogeum has been definitively established. It likely originated as a Messapian burial site evidenced by the remains of a kiln used for cremations and sacrifices, as well as numerous wall niches designed to hold cinerary urns before being converted into a dovecote. In the 17th century, a tower was erected above the hypogeum, partly to address the collapse of a section of the vault; this tower also served as a dovecote, seeing its peak usage during the Bourbon era when carrier pigeons were raised for use across the Terra d'Otranto region. The hypogeum was discovered by Antonio Susini in 1976.

The hypogeum is situated in the Valle delle Memorie (Valley of Memories). It is shaped like a Latin cross, with a long arm oriented northward that extends for 33 meters; a stone bench runs the length of the corridor, where the deceased were originally placed in a seated position, in accordance with Messapian tradition. A vault originally stood at the intersection of the arms but later collapsed; the tower was built in its place and retains its original Saracen-style spires. Niches are carved throughout both the hypogeum and the tower. There's no reference for this S.E.S.
