The Zinzulusa Cave was formed due to the intense marine erosion that affected the surrounding area. The first historical information dates back to a letter sent in 1793 by the bishop of Castro, Monsignor Del Duca to King Ferdinand IV, in which the cave is described in detail. However, it was from 1922 until 1958 that the cave attracted attention with numerous visits, explorations and scientific publications regarding its history, geology, ethnology and biology. The Zinzulusa Cave is of great scientific importance for the numerous underground animal species found there, especially crustaceans, many of which are ancient and unique to the cave itself or to the Salento Peninsula. From an ethnological point of view, during the same period of scientific explorations, numerous finds and artifacts from different eras, such as the Neolithic, Paleolithic and Roman times, were found. These finds include microburins, blades, scrapers, pottery shards, bone, flint and obsidian artifacts, providing evidence of an ancient and regular human presence inside the cave.
