Grotta della poesia
National Geographic talked about it, a legend talks about it and it is included in the ranking of the 10 most beautiful natural pools in the world. We are in Salento, almost halfway between Otranto and Lecce, passing through the Salento coast: we are at the Grotta della Poesia, one of the most popular attractions in Italy. This cave, which forms a natural swimming pool with amazing colours, is located precisely in the locality of Roca Vecchia, in the municipality of Melendugno, about 20km from Otranto and 25 from Lecce. The name “Grotta della Poesia” probably derives from the Greek term “Posìa”, which means fresh water spring. It is thought that once upon a time there was a source of fresh water here, which is no longer present. Like all enchanting places, however, this paradise is also surrounded by stories and legends: it is said that a princess lived here, who loved to dive and bathe in these very waters. Many men began to reach the stretch of Salento coast just to admire it, fascinated by its beauty. Needless to say, inspired by her, they composed verses and poems. Maybe it really is a legend, or maybe not. What we know for sure is that engravings dating back to the second millennium BC have been found on the internal rocks of the cave.
