Cava di Bauxite Otranto
The Bauxite quarry in Otranto is to be counted, without a doubt, among the great naturalistic treasures of Salento. A scenic and magical place, the Cava is located in the hinterland, near the famous lighthouse of Punta Palascia and Monte Sant'Angelo, and represents one of the most valuable destinations, from a naturalistic point of view, in the whole of Puglia. Today, right where the disused open-air quarry stands, a small lake ecosystem has come to life, an enchanting lake with emerald green waters (formed, in all likelihood, due to infiltrations from the nearby aquifers).
The particular color of the water contrasts, in a fascinating way, with the surrounding rocky walls (which, however, are characterized by a beautiful intense and brilliant red).
It is impossible to remain indifferent in front of such a natural masterpiece if to all this we add a dense and lush vegetation as a backdrop to the evocative desolate, almost desert-like landscape.
